GenderInSITE
Organized by: the Gender Advisory Board, United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development, the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) and TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, with funding from the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida).
GenderInSITE - Gender in Science, Innovation, Technology and Engineering - is an international network and campaign to raise the awareness of decision makers on the gender, science, technology and innovation dimensions of development.
The main message of the campaign is that STI for development policy and programmes will be more effective, equitable and sustainable when the gender lens is applied - that is, when they reflect the vision, aims, concerns, perspective, knowledge and abilities of both women and men.
The initiative is coordinated by OWSD, the Gender Advisory Board of the UN Commission for Science and Technology for Development (GAB-CSTD) and TWAS, with support from the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida).
To date, two planning workshops have been held:
- In January 2010, GenderInSITE brought together 30 participants from international agencies, international and national science organizations, and civil society to: agree on the need for this kind of campaign and to identify the key leverage issues and gaps.
- In February 2011 a workshop was held to plan strategy and action with a small select group of relevant institutions and stakeholders. In addition to the organizing institutions, participating groups included UNESCO, the UNESCO Chair on Women and Science and Technology in LAC; Africa Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS); the Global Network of Science Academies (IAP), the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida), Elsevier, and the L'Oreal Foundation.
